Dead by Daylight Moves To Dedicated Servers

We are thrilled by the amazing response to Dead by Daylight since its initial launch in 2016. Over the past two years, more than 10 million players have visited the realm of The Entity to play our survival action horror game. We are fortunate to have such a strong community and we would like to thank you all for your dedication.

While we are enthusiastic about the game’s growth, we know that, to ensure a promising future, we need to solidify the game’s health and online performance. Over the past year, the development team has been hard at work, investing in better technology (Unreal update, CPU and GPU optimizations, the soon to be released matchmaking improvements), better deployment processes (Public Test Build) and various quality of life updates (Anti-Cheat update, unlockable original characters, improvements to the soft ban system). Now, we are ready to take the next step.

Today, we are announcing that Dead by Daylight will be migrating to dedicated servers on all platforms by end of Summer 2019. This will help us ensure the longevity of the game for many years to come. Dedicated servers will be more reliable when connecting to a live match and will offer a better and safer network environment.

You’ve been requesting this for a long time, and so, we truly are excited to share this news with you! Our team of programmers has already done a first successful internal test back in November. We will keep you posted on our upcoming milestones. Thank you!

Dedicated Servers FAQ

What is the difference between the current online network model and upcoming dedicated servers?

With our current online infrastructure, the Killer hosts ranked matches. The connection to the game and its quality depends on that host and the strength/stability of their internet connection.

With dedicated servers, all players connect to a server at a data center. The server is the host and is more reliable than any player hosting a game. Overall, dedicated servers will offer a better network experience, will be a safer environment and offers more customizable options (punishing people who disconnect from a ranked game for example).

What is the target migration date for dedicated servers?

We are targeting Summer 2019.

Why did you wait so long to migrate to dedicated servers?

It’s a complex process; imagine you’re completely renovating your kitchen, but you nonetheless decide to invite your family over for Thanksgiving supper! With Dead by Daylight, we want to make sure that the game remains entirely functional and playable while we make these important changes to our online infrastructure.

Over the past two years, the development team has grown significantly, as we hired various talents to come help us solidify our processes and develop our technological and online expertise. We’ve been hard at work for the past year and are now confident we can achieve the dedicated server migration for Summer 2019.

Are dedicated servers going to affect the core gameplay experience?

No, dedicated servers should not affect the core gameplay.

Will i still be able to play with my friends through dedicated servers?

Yes, you will still be able to play with your friends after the migration.

Can you tell us how many data centers and where they will be located?

We will be able to announce this information as we get closer to the deployment date.

What can you tell us of the different development milestones? Will you be running tests on the PTB prior to fully migrating to dedicated servers?

We will be testing dedicated servers before launching them on the live game. We’ll communicate more information as we get closer to the deployment date.
